Draw in the Dark

Draw in the Dark

Dry-Fire · At Home

Verified clear, lights off. Twenty draws in a dark room from full concealment to a verified sight picture. You will find out quickly whether your draw depends on looking at the gun.

Live-Fire · At the Range

Fifteen rounds at 7 yards in a dim bay if available, drawing from concealment, three rounds per string. If low light is not available, shoot normally and run the dark reps at home tonight.

Service Pistol

Duty rigs are consistent, which is an advantage in the dark. Use it.

Concealed Carry

This is the realistic version of your carry: dark, cold, and wearing a jacket.

Carbine

Sling version: mount the rifle in the dark and confirm the optic is where you expect it.

Optional Standard

AUX (when ready): draw to a verified sight picture in the dark in under two and a half seconds.

Mind

Your draw should not require your eyes. If it does, that is worth knowing tonight.

Your Daily Callout — By Archetype

The Initiator Yours

Slow the first few reps down. Darkness punishes the shortcuts you have been taking.

The Scout Yours

Notice how much of your draw you were confirming visually without realizing it.

The Guardian Yours

Most of the time you spend with your family after work is in the dark half of the year.

The Strategist Yours

Same draw, same sequence, whether the lights are on or off. That is the standard.

Coach's Note

Layer: five reps with the support hand holding a light.

Standards & Safety
The Four Rules — Every Rep, No Exceptions
  1. Treat every firearm as if it is loaded — always, no matter what you think you know.
  2. Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target and you have decided to fire.
  4. Be sure of your target — and everything beyond it.

Dry-fire: no ammunition in the room. Verify the firearm is clear — twice. Use a safe backstop. When you finish, say it out loud: “Dry fire is over.”
